ARTWORK STORY // DESCRIPTION

Blue seems to erupt from the centre of The Smashing Crackerjack, breaking into hundreds of

fine droplets and restless marks.

What begins as a cool, misty atmosphere becomes a celebration of chance and impact. Dense

clusters below contrast with the airier upper space, as though a burst of energy has been

suspended mid-flight.

Look closely and the surface begins to separate into different tempos. Some marks are little

more than whispers; others gather into a lively concentration of blue and violet. The pale

background gives these scattered gestures room to expand, like sound dispersing after a

sudden joyful shout.

The work has a playful, almost celebratory character without relying on bold blocks of colour. Its

cooler tones make it especially appealing beside pale timber, white walls and soft textiles,

where the delicate detail can be appreciated from both near and far.

The title has a wonderful sense of surprise, and the painting responds with marks that look

spontaneous without losing their overall harmony. The concentration of colour near the centre

makes the surrounding pale space feel unusually expansive, almost as if we are watching an

event from a safe and exhilarating distance.

There is no need to decide whether the burst resembles water, confetti or a sudden gust. The

delight comes from the ambiguity. The Smashing Crackerjack invites an energetic reading from

across the room and a much more delicate one up close, where tiny individual marks become

visible.

Its pale blues and lively surface give a contemporary room movement without overwhelming its

sense of light.
