Her Gaze Like Smoke (Marilyn Monroe series)

Acrylic on canvas | 40cm (W) × 50cm (H) × 2cm (D) | Ready to hang

ARTWORK STORY // DESCRIPTION

Her Gaze Like Smoke is a portrait of a look that cannot quite be held.

The familiar Marilyn image becomes elusive: softness and intensity coexist, leaving the viewer

to wonder what lies beyond the performance of glamour. Its title adds a sense of movement to

something still.

Smoke changes shape as soon as we try to hold it. The title lends that elusive quality to

Marilyn's gaze, making the portrait feel less like a familiar publicity image and more like a

question that remains unanswered.

Softness and intensity sit together in the idea of a look that can be recognised but never fully

understood. This is a more introspective interpretation of glamour, suited to a space where

portraiture can be contemplated at leisure.

Smoke can be seen but never held in a fixed shape. Her Gaze Like Smoke uses that elusive

quality to suggest the mystery of a familiar face. We recognise Marilyn, yet the title hints that no

amount of looking can fully explain another person.

The portrait becomes an exploration of distance between appearance and inner life. Its

emotional appeal lies in that uncertainty: a gaze may seem direct, but its meaning remains

open. The painting offers a thoughtful counterpoint to more playful treatments of the same icon.

An intimate, mysterious piece that rewards a lingering glance.
