ARTWORK STORY // DESCRIPTION
The moment before a wave is caught holds its own kind of electricity. A surfer stands beside a
board marked with Australian coastal names, poised against an immense blue sea.
Warm skin and pale surfboard lettering interrupt the deep marine colours. Fine white arcs move
across the scene like spray or wind, carrying the eye beyond the still figure.
The board carries place names and graphic lettering like souvenirs of a coastline travelled and
remembered. Against the wide blue field, the surfer's quiet posture holds the anticipation of
movement. White curved lines suggest the unseen forces of the ocean: wind, swell and the
paths that waves leave behind.
It is not a picture of triumph after a ride, but of possibility before it begins. That distinction gives
the work its freshness. The expansive format is particularly suited to a coastal living area, where
it can evoke salt air without becoming a conventional seascape.
The surfboard is both an object and a promise. Its graphic details anchor the figure in the world
of surf culture, while the surrounding blue opens out into the much larger uncertainty of the sea.
The viewer can almost imagine the pause before stepping into the water, when excitement and
respect exist together.
Catch the Wave celebrates anticipation rather than achievement. It is about recognising a
moment and choosing to move with it. The broad composition makes room for that feeling of
possibility, allowing the painting to resonate with travellers, ocean lovers and anyone drawn to
the idea of following their own current.
This work brings the freedom and anticipation of surf culture into a contemporary coastal
interior.
